About Us / History & Mission
Lymphoma is the 6th most common cancer in Australia with more than 80 different subtypes and is the number one cancer in the 16-29 age group. Lymphoma is also the 3rd most common cancer in children.
Shirley Winton OAM became the founding president of Lymphoma Australia and her own personal journey with Lymphoma highlighted many of the challenges facing patients and their families across Australia. Despite relapses and a stem cell transplant at the young age of 72 Shirley worked every day and night for this cause until she was called home to heaven in 2005.
To date, Lymphoma Australia has also raised the bar within Australia and at the world level with informative, easy to understand and relevant resources about Lymphoma.
However, a critical component and challenge for our organisation is to also address the Lymphoma knowledge gap at the community level and to motivate key decision makers to prioritise this cancer as a significant health concern in our society based on our current facts and figures.
Our team focuses on the following goals to ensure we continue to make a difference and change outcomes for the lymphoma / CLL community in Australia
Our staff and volunteers work hard to make sure that everyone affected by lymphoma in Australia have the best possible information, support, treatment and care. To achieve this, we work closely with our Board of Directors and our Medical Advisory Panel.
Together we help people with lymphoma and their families by providing reliable information and the right support. We support doctors and nurses so that they can provide the best care possible to people with lymphoma. We raise awareness and make sure that lymphoma is not forgotten by the government and policymakers. We support the thousands of fundraisers and volunteers who make our work possible.
